The Spain midfielder became Arsene Wenger's third addition of the summer when he completed a move from Malaga and the centre-back believes he will suit the Gunners' style of play perfectly.
The Belgium international also praised the impression made by young winger Serge Gnabry during pre-season.

"This is the first time I have really seen Serge, but you can see he is really quick, good with the ball and a really talented player."
The Gunners have also signed Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud to bolster their attacking options as they seek to win a first trophy since 2005.
Arsene Wenger's side kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Sunderland on August 18, and Vermaelen is eagerly anticipating the new season.
"The squad looks strong," he opined. "There are not a lot of injuries at the moment, apart from Bacary Sagna and Jack Wilshere. For the rest it looks good.
"Everyone looks fit and sharp and it is good that we have so many new players as well.
"At the beginning of last season I was injured with the same problem I had before. For the rest of the season I played quite a lot of games so I was quite pleased with that, but of course I want to do better this year."
