QPR midfielder Barton to train with Fleetwood Town

The midfielder who was banned for 12 matches, docked six weeks wages and stripped of the captaincy for his behaviour against Sergio Aguero is poised to join the League Two side

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton is set to join Fleetwood Town for pre-season training while Mark Hughes' side are on tour in Asia.

The contoversial 29-year-old is due to join the League Two side within the next, after his behaviour in the QPR's last game of the season against Manchester City earned him a red card and left his future at the club in doubt.

After being excluded from Hughes' pre-season preparations and banned from the first third of QPR's campaign, there is a chance the 29-year-old could be loaned to Fleetwood until January, but manager Micky Mellon has refused to comment on the matter.

Barton said on Twitter: "Looking forward to training with Fleetwood Town for the week. Will get a much needed sweat on.

"Still have 3 years left at QPR. Exciting times for the club, which I intended to be a part of. Need to get some fitness in the meantime.

"Fleetwood are a young club going places. 5 promotions already in the last few years. If I help some of their young players, great."

The former Newcastle player has spoken of his determination to gain and maintain his fitness so he is ready for when he returns for Rangers.

Barton added: "Training with them will certainly help me with my short term fitness and my plan on being as fit as possible during my 12 game ban."
