thumbnail Hello,

The 42-year-old Scot hails Brad Guzan after his performance in the Villan's pre-season win over Philadelphia Union and says every player is on a 'level playing field'

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has hailed his goalkeeping options and hinted that Brad Guzan could challenge Shay Given in the Villans first team this season.

Guzan kept a clean sheet as Villa beat Philadelphia Union 1-0 on their pre-season tour of the United States and Lambert has hailed his goalkeeping options, insisting that all players are "on a level playing field."

Lambert told reporters: "Shay Given is a fantastic, world-class goalkeeper. And every time I’ve seen Brad Guzan play, he’s been excellent. It’s great that he’s signed with the club again. Everybody’s on a level playing field."

UP THE VILLANS
6/4 Aston Villa are 6/4 to finish in the top half of the Premier League with Paddy Power

Lambert left Norwich at the end of last season to take up his role at Villa and hailed the club's history and tradition as a major factor in his decision to leave Carrow Road. The former Motherwell man is also keen to improve on a disappointing campaign at Villa Park last term under Alex McLeish

"Norwich was brilliant, and I really enjoyed my time there,” he said. "But Aston Villa has tradition, it’s huge and it’s won the European Cup. Not many teams in European football can say that.

"What happened last year is in the past – I can’t control that. It’s a big football club that I’m the manager of, and so the expectancy level is very high. If I keep getting that effort from them and that commitment, we’ll be okay."

Villa will continue their pre-season tour of America with a game against Chicago Fire on Saturday.
