Andy Carroll's Liverpool career looks to be drawing to a close just 18 months after it began and former club Newcastle United are reportedly leading the chase to sign him.

At times, the 23-year-old has shown glimpses of the promise that led the Reds to splash out £35 million to secure his signature, most notably bagging the winning goal in the past season's FA Cup semi-final against Merseyside rivals Everton.

In the Premier League, however, Carroll has scored just six goals in 42 games for Liverpool - just over half the total of 11 that he managed in the 19 top flight matches he played for Newcastle before switching to Anfield during the 2010-11 season.

Although doubts remain over whether the two clubs can agree a fee for the Gateshead-born No.9, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew seems willing to offer Carroll the chance to revive his career back at home in the north-east.

Now wearing the shirt number previously donned by the likes of Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and Jackie Milburn, however, is Papiss Cisse, who netted 13 goals in just 14 appearances after completing a move worth around £8m from Freiburg to take English football by storm.

Demba Ba also carried his impressive form with West Ham over to the Sports Direct Arena, scoring 16 times last season despite tailing off in the latter months of the campaign having been shifted to a wider role following Cisse's arrival.

Cisse will almost certainly start the season as Newcastle's first-choice attacker but could Carroll unseat Ba? Would Pardew have to change the system that helped the team finish in fifth place? Or is the target man better off landing elsewhere?
