The club's owner has hit out at players' representatives claiming they can disrupt careers and "spoil the game" due to their increasing financial demands
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has blasted football agents as he looks likely to lose Hugo Rodallega on a free transfer this summer. The Colombian managed just two goals in the top flight last season and the Latics' chairman believes that financial gain for player and representative is the motive behind Rodallega leaving the club.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Whelan said: "It's agents who blow in their ear and say ‘I can get you so much money.’
"Sometimes the lads must realise their agent wants the money more than they do, and it tends to spoil the game at times.
"Their agent comes along and says 'Don't re-sign for Wigan, I can get you a big fee or big fat wages if you go there,' and the agent gets a nice big fat fee.
"And that's what's important to the agent. Not all of them - you've got one or two who have the players here at heart, which they should have, because it's the players who count.
"The agents unfortunately get greedier and greedier every year, and spoil the footballer. They spoil his image, they divert his career at times when he doesn't want it diverting, all in the cause of cash."
