The self-proclaimed 'Special One' worked with the Northern Irishman at Chelsea, placing him in charge of the club's youth teams, and feels that he deserves his chance at Anfield

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has lauded the decision to hand his former protege, Brendan Rodgers, the manager's job at Liverpool.

The departing Swansea City coach, 39, takes over the reins at Anfield after the club dispensed with the services of club legend Kenny Dalglish earlier in the summer, and the Portuguese has backed the move to be a success.

RODGERS NEW LIVERPOOL BOSS
The Swansea City manager has agreed a a deal to take over at Anfield
"I am very happy with his appointment at Liverpool, especially because he did it as a consequence of all his amazing work at Swansea," Mourinho told reporters.

"Brendan is a good man, a family guy and a friend."

Rodgers began his coaching career with Reading's youth team before being snapped up by Mourinho at Chelsea, and has since gone on to manage Watford, the Royals and Swansea since breaking into management in 2008.

Mourinho believes that the forward-thinking coach's tactics and ideas give him the required ability to succeed in the role.

"When he joined us at Chelsea he was a young coach with lots of desire to learn," he added.

"But he was also a coach with ideas, who was ready not just to listen but also to communicate and share."
