thumbnail Hello,

The shot-stopper is currently with the Republic of Ireland squad as they prepare for Euro 2012, but took time to show his support for the 42-year-old's possible appointment

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has offered his backing to Norwich City manager Paul Lambert, with the 42-year-old heavily linked with the vacant position at the Midlands club.

The former Colchester boss is the hot favourite to take the reins at Villa Park to replace the sacked Alex McLeish after he opened talks with the club on Thursday and has since handed in his resignation at Norwich - which was subsequently rejected by the club.

"If Paul was to come in, it would be a great appointment because he's a fantastic manager" - Shay Given

Given is currently away with the Republic of Ireland squad as they prepare for Euro 2012, but, with Lambert seemingly edging closer to taking over at Villa, the club’s No.1 was quick to offer his support to the “fantastic manager”.

"If that's the case - I have no idea because I'm stuck in Italy somewhere and don't know what's going on at Aston Villa - but if Paul was to come in, it would be a great appointment because he's a fantastic manager," Given told Sky Sports.

"At every club he's been at he's been going up all the time so, hopefully if they can get that done today, it would be great news for the club."

Given is aware that continued speculation and confusion over the club’s direction heading into the new season will only serve to damage their preparation, and is eager to see a manager appointed as soon as possible.

He added: "The sooner the manager is in place for next season the better because there will be targets and players he wants to get in himself. The sooner that's done the better.”
