Manager Andy Thorn believes the highly-rated 18-year-old needs to stay at the club to continue his progression despite reportedly catching the eye of the Magpies

Coventry boss Andy Thorn is desperate to keep Gael Bigirimana at the club despite intense speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies have reportedly lodged a bid of up to £1 million for the 18-year-old who enjoyed an impressive debut season for the Sky Blues, making a total of 28 appearances.

Thorn refused to be drawn on a possible bid from Alan Pardew’s side but stressed his belief that Bigirimana should stay at the Ricoh Arena.

"Gael's a good talent but he's still got a heck of a lot to learn and I'd be really disappointed if he left," Thorn told the Coventry Telegraph.

"He's in there and very much part of my plans and I'd love to see him continue his development with us.

"I think it's really important at his age that he's playing competitive football. I'd love him to be part of it."

Burundi-born Bigirimana came through the club’s academy and still has two years left to run on his existing contract.
