Manchester City emerged triumphant over rivals Manchester United as Vincent Kompany's header proved decisive and sent his team back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference.

Chances were scarce both before and after the goal, which came very late in the first half of what turned out to be a cagey affair, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side failing to muster a single shot on target throughout the match.
