Manchester City keeper Hart reveals he studies Casillas to improve his game

England's number one shot-stopper watches footage of his Real Madrid and Spain counterpart as he looks to develop his ability and progress to the next level ahead of Euro 2012

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has revealed he is studying Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas in the hope of improving his own proficiency between the posts.

The first-choice England keeper is already regarded as one of the best in the business, but Hart wants to take his abilities up a level, by watching how the Spanish shot-stopper approaches one-on-one situations.

Hart has recently been nominated for the prestigious PFA player of the Year award and will go up against City team-mates David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

As Euro 2012 gets ever closer, the 25-year-old believes he needs to continue to improve if he is to become the best in the world.

Hart told The Mail on Sunday: “I'm trying to work out exactly how Casillas manages to react to what the forward does, instead of trying to force the striker into a decision, like I have done until now.

13/2 Manchester City are 13/2 with Sportingbet to win the Premier League title this season.

“It's better doing it his way, using your reflexes rather than trying to anticipate what is going to happen. I'm working on it - it's something I need to learn.

“In our league you know the forward will favour power over placement, so you can make yourself big and be fairly sure that he's going to shoot where you are covering.

“But more and more I'm coming across different strikers or styles of play that require just what Casillas has; quick decision-making and quick reflexes.”

The 6ft 4in City keeper has also been impressed by Casillas’s ability to remain focused when Spain or Real Madrid are in complete control of a game.

Hart added: “When your team are on top, the most difficult thing is not saving two dozen shots, but making saves when you only have to face three shots on target.

“It's something people don't appreciate and I've studied Casillas to see how he does it.”
