thumbnail Hello,

The 27-year-old knows what it’s like to be involved in a relegation scrap following his time at Middlesbrough and is anticipating a hotly-contested game at Ewood Park

Liverpool’s Stewart Downing is expecting a tough match against relegation-battlers Blackburn Rovers, and is that aware his side need to start scoring goals to stop their slump in form.

The midfielder has first-hand experience of being in a battle to avoid the drop after his spell at Middlesbrough and believes that Steve Kean’s side will be going all-out to grab a vital win.

"It will be a difficult game,” Downing told the club's official website. “They are fighting for their lives, but we've got to keep concentrating on our game, keep creating chances and we need to start scoring goals and winning games.

"It can be difficult playing teams fighting against relegation. They are playing for their futures - they don't want to drop down a division. I've been in that situation with Middlesbrough before and it's not good.

"We saw with [Aston] Villa, they were fighting like hell for the team and made it difficult for us at times.

"Nevertheless, we still should have won the game. We had the quality to win it and with a little bit more luck, or their keeper not pulling off some great saves, we would have won."

The Reds go into the match looking to end a spell of four Premier League matches without a win which has seen them drop out of contention for a Champions League spot.
