Wigan chairman Whelan calls for fans to support the club in their relegation scrap

The Latics' owner calls for continued support from the DW Stadium faithful as they continue to fight for their Premier League lives following 2-1 win over Liverpool

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has called for the club's fans to get behind them in their fight to stay in the Premier League following their incredible 2-1 victory at Liverpool.

The result leaves the Latics level with QPR and just one point behind Bolton who currently sit outside the relegation zone in 17th position.

Whelan told Wigan's official website: "When you hear those sentiments it gives you a great feeling after such a bad run of luck in recent weeks with games we could and should have scored more goals in.

"At Anfield we fought hard and played good football from back to front, and in the second half we dominated the game for long periods.''

The Latics need a strong end to their campaign to survive the drop but Whelan believes that it is possible after this weekends performance.

He continued: "All our supporters who made the trip were absolutely fantastic and I'd like to thank them so much for the noise they made and the support they gave the lads on the pitch.

"We need all our supporters and the whole town behind us now. I would urge everyone to come and get behind the lads this weekend when we play Stoke City at the DW Stadium.

"It were in a fight now but we're up for that fight and what you saw at Anfield on Saturday is what you're going to get for the rest of the season."

"We came through a tough test and we have to kick on now, believe in ourselves and if we do that we'll go on and we'll stay up."
