Former boss Mick McCarthy 'undermined' by Wolves chairman Steve Morgan - Graham Taylor
Mick McCarthy's dismissal comes with Wolves in the relegation zone, having taken just 14 points in the Premier League since August but the chairman far from blameless says Taylor.
By Alex Richards
The Black Country side’s owner entered the dressing room to criticise the players following their recent defeat to Liverpool, and that incident may have proved fatal for the now-former manager.
McCarthy was sacked on Monday morning, following Wolves 5-1 home defeat by bitter rivals West Brom at the weekend, the culmination of a run of one win in 13 matches.
In the aftermath of the intervention, the 53-year-old denied that the chairman's actions had caused a breakdown in his relationship with the squad.
"This is the first time in my managerial career a chairman has done that," McCarthy said at the time.
"I don't feel it erodes my authority, but we've spoken and [Morgan] knows my views about that."
However, McCarthy saw fit to apologise for his side dreadful second-half collapse on Sunday, and Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live that Morgan's behaviour at the end of the Liverpool match, may have proved fatal to McCarthy.
"Does that undermine your manager? Of course it does," Taylor said.
"I think this probably started when Steve Morgan went into the dressing room and delivered a message to the players."
"Your players see that and think: 'Who's in charge at this club? It's not Mick McCarthy, it's Steve Morgan."
Sunday’s defeat left Wolves to drop back into the relegation zone, and Taylor was equally damning of the part the players have played in McCarthy's demise.
"Managers are responsible for results but players are responsible for their performances" Taylor continued.
"I watched the game yesterday and a number of the Wolves players should be looking at themselves.
"A 5-1 defeat at home to West Brom? You'll do well to survive that."
