With a gap of ten points now opening up between Tottenham, in third position, and the chasing pack, it appears there is just one spot left for those who are closely contesting for Champions League football next season.

Arsenal, who currently occupy the fourth-spot, were the only team out of the candidates to win at the weekend, thanks to Thierry Henry's late goal against Sunderland.

Fifth-placed Chelsea, behind the Gunners only by goal-difference, were defeated 2-0 away at Everton, with goals from Steven Pienaar and Denis Stracqualursi.

Andre Villas-Boas could not hold his anger back after the loss, telling reporters: "I think today was one of our worst games of the season.

"I think the worst in every sense of the word."

Meanwhile, Newcastle, who sit just below the Blues, got taken apart by Spurs, losing 5-0 at White Hart Lane. Harry Redknapp's new man Louis Saha bagged a brace, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Niko Kranjcar and Emmanuel Adebayor completing the rout.

The final contenders, Liverpool, were beat by 2-1 by Manchester United in a tense game at Old Trafford. The game was overshadowed by the pre-match handshakes, or lack-of by Luis Suarez, but Wayne Rooney netted twice before the Uruguayan pulled one back.
