Bolton Wanderers midfielder Mark Davies has stated that his goal against Wigan Athletic in his side's 2-1 loss to the Latics counted for nothing.
The 23-year-old scored for the third time this season on Saturday when his left-footed volley beat Ali Al Habsi in the Wigan goal to equalise for the home side, but Roberto Martinez's men netted a winner through James McArthur to claim all three points.
"The lads are down because we all thought it was a game we should have won,” Davies told the club's official website.
"It was three points we needed and it cancels out some good results and performances in the last few weeks, and that's the most disappointing thing.
"Wigan scored their goals at important times. If we had gone in at 0-0 at half-time then we could have come out for the second half and started again.
"We didn't play well in the first 45 minutes but because they got the goal just before half-time we had to chase the game.
"My goal was pretty instinctive. It was there to be hit and fortunately I managed to get a good contact on the ball, and it's another goal with my left foot.
"But at the end of the day, I'd much rather not score and win the game. I'm happy with my goal but it doesn't mean anything because we lost the match.”
Gary Caldwell opened the scoring for Wigan two minutes before the break and, despite Davies’ 67th minute leveller, McArthur netted 10 minutes later for the visitors.
"When we equalised I thought we were going to go on and get all three points," Davies added.
"Ryo looked sharp when he came on - he made some good decisions when he had the ball and I thought he was likely to get us the winning goal.
"But we have to move on. We can't dwell on it. We know that we've got some difficult away games but we have shown that we can get points against Arsenal and Liverpool.
"We'll have to go to Chelsea and Manchester City and make sure we play well."
