Newcastle United striker Demba Ba has voiced his belief that French clubs suffer because they are unwilling to take risks.

The French-born Senegal international forward has been in fine form on Tyneside this season, and has revealed that Rennes were once interested in his services, but felt that he represented too much of a risk.

"Rennes wanted me at one point, but in France they have a problem - they don't like taking risks," Ba told France Football.

"But if you don't take risks, you don't get anywhere. You pass by the periphery of many things, like life and football."

Demba Ba joined Newcastle in the summer of 2011 after spells at West Ham United, Hoffenheim, Mouscron and French side Rouen.

He returned from his country's disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign to score the first goal of Newcastle's 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
