Stoke City’s Robert Huth loses appeal over red card issued against Sunderland
The defender will serve a three-match suspension after the FA upheld referee Martin Atkinson’s decision, despite replays suggesting the dismissal was harsh
By Joe Wright
Stoke City defender Robert Huth has lost his appeal against the red card he received against Sunderland on Saturday.
Huth was dismissed in the first half against the Black Cats for a lunge on midfielder David Meyler, although replays indicated the defender tried to pull out of the challenge and no significant contact with the opponent was made.
Manager Tony Pulis stated after the game that he intended to appeal, claiming that there was “no intent” behind the challenge and suggesting Meyler’s reaction was aimed at forcing the referee’s hand.
However, the FA have turned down the Potters’ appeal, stating on their website: "An independent regulatory commission has today dismissed the claim of wrongful dismissal of Stoke City's Robert Huth.
"The defender will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect following his red card for serious foul play in the game with Sunderland on February 4."
Huth will subsequently miss two league games, away against Fulham this weekend and the home clash with Swansea on February 26, plus the FA Cup fifth-round match-up against League Two Crawley Town next weekend.
The commission did not, however, decide to add an extra match to the suspension, which can be levied if they deem the appeal to be frivolous.
