'We've shown we can compete with the best' - Dirk Kuyt confident of Liverpool's Champions League qualification chances
Following an incisive win over Wolves, Dutch winger calls for focus from the Anfield outfit in the hope that teams above them continue to falter and the Reds can climb the table
By Matt Scott
The Dutchman scored the third goal against Mick McCarthy's side on Tuesday after strikes from Andy Carroll and Craig Bellamy, to leave Kenny Dalglish's men four points behind fourth placed Chelsea in the Premier League.
Kuyt told BBC Sport: "We said to each other in the changing room before the game that the most important thing is winning our own games because we're sure the teams above will lose points.
"Against the Manchester clubs, we've shown we can compete with the best but these are the games you have to win if you're going to be involved in the top four."
The Reds are still 16 points behind table toppers Manchester City and United, with a goal difference of plus seven comparing poorly with the Red Devils' 35 and the Citizen's even better 41.

"But, we came through. Obviously there were a lot of changes so it's good to get the result.
"Belgium are a very, very strong side who are going to be really good in the future. Vincent [Kompany] told me about them and said that they were coming good and I totally agree with him."
"[Gary] Cahill I suppose is slightly more of a concern for me because it is a jaw injury. We're desperately hoping the CT scan doesn't show any fracture and it's just going to be a bruising situation, which will be bad enough, but won't stop him taking part in the tournament. As far as John's [Terry] concerned he felt his hamstring a little bit. Again it wasn't a major thing when he came off but we still need to scan it just to be 100 per cent sure."
Suffice to say, if Cahill has broken his jaw, he won't play any part in the tournament.
