Everton rival West Ham in race to sign Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic - report
David Moyes will attempt to wrap up a move for the Croatia international before the January transfer window shuts, but may be unwilling to match the Scottish side's valuation
Everton have reportedly made a move to sign Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday.
According to BBC Sport, the Merseyside club has opened talks with the Glasgow side to sign the forward, who has been prolific in the Scottish Premier League.
West Ham are understood to have had a £7 million bid for Jelavic turned down, with Rangers holding out for £8m for the top goal scorer in Scotland's top flight.
Everton, however, are unlikely to match the asking price given their financial limitations, though Moyes has some money to spend after the sale of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Spartak Moscow.
But, the Toffees, who have found goals hard to come by this season, are hoping to strike a deal with Rangers, who are also struggling financially.
Jelavic struck 19 times last season after making a summer move from Austrian side Rapid Vienna in 2010, and has already scored 17 goals this season.
The striker did not feature in the 4-0 SPL victory over Hibernian on Saturday, due to an apparent illness.
Liverpool and QPR have also been linked with a move for Jelavic.
