Brighton boss Gus Poyet denies reports club are set to swoop for Manchester United's Michael Owen

Seagulls manager laughs off claims his side are in talks to sign the English striker, but admits it would be a 'dream' for to sign a player of the former Liverpool man's calibre

Brighton boss Gus Poyet has denied speculation the club are set to sign Michael Owen from Manchester United.

The Seagulls were linked with an audacious move for the England international earlier in the week, but these reports have proven to be wide of the mark.

Although ruling out the transfer, the Chelsea legend admitted that if he could bring the former Real Madrid man to the Amex Arena, it would something dreams are made of.

Poyet told the Evening Argus: "I didn't start the rumour.

"I started one last week in here about selling Lewis Dunk to Real Madrid for £20million and nobody took it!

"I woke up and everyone was texting me about Michael Owen, even my son who knows everything. I said I don't know anything about it.

"It would be a dream for this football club to have Michael Owen but it's not true.

"I'm not saying he is not available or he doesn't want to come here and drop a few pounds in his salary, but he was not contacted, he was not thought about, he was not on the list.

"But if he wants to come he can give me a call."
