Brighton manager Gus Poyet is preparing to make an ambitious offer to bring Manchester United striker Michael Owen to the club, according to The Sun.

The newly promoted Championship side want to bring the former England international to the Amex Stadium in a bid to improve their chances of securing a play-off spot come the end of the season.

It is expected Brighton would only have to pay Manchester United a small fee for the striker who moved to Old Trafford in 2009.

The 32-year-old has previously stated that he is not prepared to move down divisions, but the lure of regular first-team football with the Seagulls may appeal to him.

The former Liverpool striker has endured an injury-plagued time at Old Trafford and has been pushed further down the pecking order by the emergence of Danny Welbeck along with regulars Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez.

Owen has made 52 appearances for United with 34 coming from the bench, scoring 17 times in his Red Devils career.
