New York Red Bulls defender Tim Ream close to completing Bolton move as work permit is granted - report

Bolton Wanderers are close to completing the signing of Tim Ream after the defender was granted a work permit, according to BBC Sport.

The USA international is set to join the Trotters from New York Red Bulls after training with them last month, following the end of the MLS season.

And now it looks like the 24-year-old will complete a move understood to be worth £2.5 million, to fill the hole left in the Bolton defence by Gary Cahill, who joined Chelsea for £7m last week.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle indicated the club were aiming to sign Ream some time ago, following the club's defeat to Manchester United on January 14.

“We are very close to bringing  in a replacement [for Cahill]," Coyle said at the time.

"Tim Ream is a terrific young player but at the same time we need to be respectful to New York Red Bulls and the MLS while we wait.

“Do we want to bring him to the club? Yes, he has impressed us but we need to apply for a work permit.”

Bolton are 17th in the Premier League following their 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday evening.
