Wolves play down reports Emmanuel Frimpong will be out for three months after suffering eye injury against Aston Villa
The midfielder, on loan from Arsenal, went off on a stretcher after being accidentally kicked by Stiliyan Petrov with the club confirming he will undergo further tests on Sunday
By Joel Lamy at Molineux
A report suggested that the on-loan Arsenal midfielder could be out for an extended period of time after an accidental collision with Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov saw him stretchered off with an eye injury as he tried to head home a corner.
But the player Tweeted after full-time, telling his followers: “You lot should stop caring about me I hope petrov foot is on after hitting A metal face:)”
He then commented in an official capacity: “I can’t remember too much about it to be honest.
“I remember heading the ball and from what I heard I then got a kick in the face.
“We’ll just have to give it a couple of days and wait for it to settle down.”
A statement released by the club added: “Emmanuel Frimpong will undergo further assessment on the eye injury which saw him stretchered off against Aston Villa this afternoon.
“The on-loan midfielder went straight to hospital for initial assessment on the injury where an initial examination revealed no head or spinal problems.
“However, the 20-year-old has a severe swelling around his eye and will need further examination to discover the extent of the problem.
“Frimpong was able to return to Molineux after the game following the trip to hospital.”
On the defeat itself, McCarthy told reporters: “We should have been more in front at half-time, we played well. We just managed to find another way to concede a goal haven’t we? From us being in good possession and having a throw-in and it ends up with five or six little things we could have done better and it ends up in our net.
“Not much more could have gone wrong: one sent off, one carried off, penalty and sod’s law Robbie [Keane] put one in the corner.
“I think there’s a few turning points in the game: the chances we had at 2-1 where I think we should have scored, the second goal, he’s hit it well Robbie [but] I think we should have done better from the throw-in to the clearance to not getting the bits in the middle of the pitch to the clearance.
“Not a glaring error from anyone but little ones which end up costing the team a goal but then the sending off changed it I don’t think we lose with 11 men on the pitch.”
With the score at 2-2 in the match Wolves lost Karl Henry to a red card after he appeared to tread on Marc Albrighton having been fouled by the Villa man.
McCarthy admitted that his former captain had no excuses for what he did but he felt Albrighton made a meal of what was minimal contact from the central midfielder
“It’s amazing that I say about little things that cost us a goal. I think it was a foul on Karl from Albrighton because he doesn’t get the ball,” he said.
“And then he’s holding on to Karl’s leg and the referee doesn’t blow. He’s got hold of his leg and Karl kicks him, he backheels him.
“Albrighton does roll around like he’s been hit with a steamroller but it’s a sending off. For all of that I’m not excusing him at all.”
