'I don’t think Arsenal's Robin van Persie will sign a new contract' - Goal.com readers have their Premier League queries answered in our Twitter Q&A
Questions on the Carlos Tevez transfer saga, if Frank Lampard will stay at Chelsea & more were answered in Greg Stobart’s Twitter Q&A this afternoon
We're over halfway into the January transfer window, and the reluctance from clubs to splash out on signings is clear to see.
Goal.com readers caught up with our correspondent Greg Stobart, who was on hand to answer all your queries on the Premier League transfer tittle-tattle, as well as thought on the games this weekend.
Below are highlights of the Q&A – click here to read the full article.
Will Robin van Persie sign a new deal at Arsenal? - Sarafadeen Adekunle
Greg Stobart: “I afraid I don’t think Robin van Persie will sign a new contract. He has delayed talks over a new deal until the summer at the earliest and knows the top clubs across Europe will all be eyeing his signature.
“I don’t know how, for the second time in as many seasons, Arsenal have allowed themselves to get in a situation where they may be forced to sell one of their leading players because he only has a year remaining on his contract.
“The Dutchman does feel a sense of loyalty to Arsenal and is now the club’s captain, but the Gunners need to finish in the top four to have any chance of keeping their star man. Even then, I don’t think it will be enough.”
Where should Carlos Tevez go and should Manchester City have accepted £20 million for him? - Mr Tim
Greg: “Roberto Mancini would like City to accept a £20m bid for Carlos Tevez just to get rid of him, but you can understand why the club are holding out for more. In normal circumstances, Tevez would command around £35m and his stand-off with City has meant the club will have to sell him for far less than his real value.
“I think the most important thing for Tevez, having not played for three months, is to move. Anywhere. He needs to get his career back on track and City need to move on, too. The money on offer from PSG will be tempting but I think the Argentine will be suited to Italian football, so a move to one of the Milan clubs makes the most sense.”
Could Frank Lampard join David Beckham at LA Galaxy? - Stuie Neale
Greg: “As Harry Redknapp would say, it’s not impossible. Lampard is in his 11th season at Chelsea but for the first time is considering his future. It is very unlikely that Lampard will leave Stamford Bridge this month but it would surprise few people in the game if he joins a new club in the summer. The 33-year-old has a poor relationship with Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas and is unhappy at no longer being an automatic starter.
“Lampard has made it clear, via third parties, that he would be interested in a move to Manchester United but I think a move abroad is more likely should he be sold by Chelsea. A move to LA Galaxy would tempt Lampard but he may feel he has more to offer at the top level in Europe.
What will the result be on Sunday when Manchester United travel to Arsenal? - Hayatuddeen A Bawa
Greg: “I think Manchester United will beat Arsenal on Sunday - but it won’t be anywhere near as one-sided as the last time the two sides played each other. I was at Old Trafford for United’s 8-2 win over Arsenal in August and it was a freak result when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were flying and the Gunners were coping with a stack of problems.
“Arsenal are a different proposition now, especially at home, while United aren’t playing with the same swashbuckling attacking intent they showed in the early part of the season. By the time this match kicks off, both teams will know the result of the earlier match between Manchester City and Tottenham. I expect United to keep the pressure on City with a professional performance and a narrow victory.”
Could Eden Hazard be a Chelsea player by the end of January? - Agada Joseph
Greg: “It’s true that Chelsea are interested in signing Eden Hazard – but I wouldn’t expect anything to happen on that front this month. The Blues have tried to steal a march on the rest of Europe by trying to sign Hazard this month, but Lille will not sell for the £25m offer mooted. The French club are adamant the Belgian attacker will not leave the club until the summer at the earliest. In any case, Lille are believed to value Hazard at more than £30m.
“Hazard himself is in no rush to leave this month and is happy to bide his time before leaving Lille, despite suggestions that Chelsea have made a huge contract offer for the 21-year-old.”
