Newcastle United star striker Demba Ba proud of Premier League goalscoring record

The Senegalese forward is on international duty at the African Cup of Nations and insists the whole squad will be urging the starting side on when the tournament begins on Saturday

Newcastle United forward Demba Ba is incredibly proud of his goalscoring record in the Premier League this season.

The 26-year-old joined the Magpies in the summer on a free transfer and has netted 15 times in the league this term, only three goals behind top scorer Robin van Persie.

The Senegalese striker, who is currently on international duty for the African Cup of Nations, revealed he was elated at how well he has done this campaign.

“I’m aware of the journey I’ve made,” Ba told “I’ve now got the chance to express myself, to do what I’ve always wanted to do in my life, and I make the most of it every day.

“I’m not really surprised; I know I’m capable of playing well, as I’ve managed to do in the first half of the season.

“It’s more than a surprise – it’s a feeling of pride to be so high in the scoring charts alongside quality forwards like Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Robin van Persie.”

Senegal get their tournament underway on Saturday against Zambia and Ba insisted the whole squad will be behind the starting side despite everyone being eager to play.

“Everyone wants a starting role, but honestly, if that chance falls to another player, we’ll be happy for him and give him our full support,” the former West Ham United striker continued.

“We’ve been preparing for this competition for two years. We’re a group of friends and most of us have known each other for a very long time. The good mood in our team will help us go far.

“Personally, I just want to carry on in this vein and win titles. That, after all, is the ultimate goal when you play football.”
