Boris Becker: Bayern Munich need to follow the example of Manchester United and Arsenal when appointing their next coach
The nine-time grand slam winner feels Bastian Schweinsteiger is invaluable to die Roten, and that the club's next managerial appointment must be with a view to the long term
By Maximilian Bensinger
Boris Becker has insisted that Bayern Munich must follow the example of Premier League side's such as Arsenal and Manchester United when appointing their next coach.
The 44-year-old is not only a tennis legend, but also a big fan of the Bundesliga side. For a decade, the Wimbledon winner served on the German record champions' Economic Advisory Board. And when he speaks of the team, his heart still beats for the Bavarians.
In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, Becker speaks about Bayern as they head into the second half of the Bundesliga season, the situation surrounding defender Breno, rivals Dortmund, and the champions' signing of Marco Reus. Be sure to check out part two of his interview on Saturday.
Mr. Becker, you served for 10 years on Bayern's Economic Advisory Board. Is the club from Munich still close to your heart?
Becker: Bayern Munich are still my favourite club, I'm also a member. I feel really positive when it comes to this season.
What makes you so confident?
Becker: It firstly is due to the new coach, Jupp Heynckes, and secondly, this is the impression left from the first round.
You've said that Matthias Sammer would be the perfect coach for Bayern
Becker: The question is how long Jupp Heynckes will be coach. It's not about the quality, but the duration. I think it's great to see, at clubs like Manchester United or Arsenal, a real 'coach's era.' The big clubs would do themselves a favour to hold onto a coach. I hope Bayern will do so, that's why I've thrown Matthias Sammer [44] in the race.
What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?
Becker: He is one of Germany's best coaches. I'm afraid he feels fit as a fiddle in Dortmund and wants to build something great there.
Bayern face Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday. Tough opponents?
Becker: A big compliment to Lucien Favre! Just a few months ago, Borussia were sure to be relegated. What he has done in so short time is phenomenal! I hope they do not continue their success against Bayern. Just as when they met in the first half of the season the teams are still lacking match practice and rhythm. Die Fohlen are a very difficult team entering 2012.
After recovering from a broken collarbone, Bastian Schweinsteiger is currently having trouble with his knee. Can he nevertheless help the team?
Becker: Schweinsteiger is the most important player for Bayern. You could see the drop in performance immediately after his broken collarbone. He is the head of the team. Even a not-very-fit Schweinsteiger is a gain for die Roten.
