Liverpool are close to securing the signature of 19-year-old Sporting midfielder Joao Carlos, The Guardian reports.

The newspaper claims that a deal worth near to £1 million has been agreed between the two clubs for the midfielder, who has been likened to Deco in Portugal.

Carlos is believed to have impressed the Reds hierarchy when he inspired his side to a 3-0 win over Liverpool’s youngsters in August in a NextGen Series match, the continental competition for clubs’ youth sides.

The teenage prospect, who is training with the Sporting first team but has yet to make his debut, is the latest in a long line of talents brought through at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, with the likes of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani having developed there.

Liverpool recently secured the signature of Wycombe Wanderers starlet Jordan Ibe in December for a fee believed to be around £500,000.
