Antonio Valencia: Wayne Rooney is on top form for Manchester United

The Ecuadorian believes his team-mate has had a good season so far, despite his recent bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson, and is glad himself to be back in his usual right-wing slot

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia believes Wayne Rooney is coming into top form as the race for the Premier League title heats up.

The England international has had inconsistent season, which led to an alleged bust-up with boss Sir Alex Ferguson over Christmas, however, the Ecuadorian feels the striker’s ability speaks for itself.

He told the club’s official website: "I think Wayne's been at a good level all season, really on top form and now he's showing again how valuable he is for us.

"What's great about him is that he's very bright. He sees things very early and gives the ball quickly, so it gives you a chance to be quicker and act sharper yourself.

"But I think I have a good understanding and relationship not just with Rooney, but with other players like Nani, Chicharito [Javier Hernandez] and Danny Welbeck."

Due to the injury crisis which has seen United without key defenders Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and captain Nemanja Vidic, the former Wigan man has been forced to play at right-back recently.

Despite proving an able deputy at full-back, the midfielder is now relieved to be back in his familiar position on the right wing.

"I think when you do manage to put in good crosses and create goals, it does give you confidence," he added.

"I feel more comfortable being back in my usual position.

"The manager asked me to fill in at right-back because two or three of my team-mates were injured. I was obviously happy to do that, especially when he mentioned that it was only for a brief period.

"But I am more comfortable in my own position."
