Newcastle United’s Sammy Ameobi ruled out for a ‘number of months’ due to injury

The England Under-21 forward went off with an ailment during a reserve match against Wigan and will now have to endure an extended period on the sidelines for the club

After limping off during a Newcastle United reserve match on Tuesday, Sammy Ameobi has been ruled out for a "number of months" with an undisclosed injury.

The 19-year-old will have an extended period on the sidelines after he was forced off the pitch during Newcastle reserves 3-1 victory over their Wigan counterparts.

The injury was a result of an innocuous challenge, with the youngster coming off worse and having to be taken off just after half-time.

The news will come as a massive setback to Ameobi’s progress at Newcastle and for England Under-21s, with the forward now set to miss the clash with Belgium in February.

Ameobi has also been mounting a charge for a regular place for the Magpies first team, making 13 appearances this season and scoring his first goal for the club in their League Cup win against Scunthorpe in August.

The injury leaves boss Alan Pardew with a further attacking headache, after losing star striker Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations and now the promising Ameobi.
