The former Gunner has claimed that the German defender has the potential to be a success at the Emirates, as he continues to strike up a strong partnership with Thomas Vermaelen
The Gunners legend has cast his eye over the player’s progress since the German made the move to the Emirates, and the 45-year-old is of the belief that he and Thomas Vermaelen could prove a success in the centre of defence.
Whilst Adams believes the former Werder Bremen's quality has already been displayed regularly this season, he hopes he will be given more time alongside the Belgian in order to cement their defensive parternship.
“I've seen Per Mertesacker a few times now, he interests me and I think he is a good player,” Adams said to the club’s official website.
“I think he is very intelligent and he knows how to play central defence.
“I'm really looking forward to seeing more of him because I don't think Thomas Vermaelen has actually played enough with him just yet. But they could be a fantastic central defensive partnership and would certainly excite me.”
The retired defender also went as far to say that the pair could go on to recreate the defensive solidarity that the Arsenal team captained by Adams was renowned for.
He added: “It'd be like going back to the days of Adams, Bould, Keown maybe.”
Mertesacker has been heavily involved at the club this season, making 16 appearances in the Premier League since his move from the Bundesliga in the summer.
