Jermain Defoe calls on Tottenham to be ‘ruthless’ against Everton
The England striker expects a tough test against David Moyes’ hard-working side, but believes his team have the confidence to clinch three points and draw level with the champions
By Joe Wright
Spurs currently sit third in the Premier League table, just six points adrift of leaders Manchester City with a game in hand after a run of just one defeat in 17 games.
They face an Everton side who have only lost one of their last five league matches but boast a miserly defensive record, and Defoe – who hit his 11th goal of the season in the FA Cup on Saturday – has encouraged his side to pull no punches against David Moyes’ hard-working Toffees.
“It all stems from the manager, he gets them working hard,” the 29-year-old told the club’s official website.
“That’s the first thing you bring to the game and if your work-rate is good, the rest of it takes care of itself, the football side of it.
“It’s always tough against Everton but we’re full of confidence and we have to try and keep doing what we’re doing.
“We’re at home, we’re playing well and we have to be ruthless.”
Spurs could draw level on points with champions Manchester United should they take all three points on Wednesday and move to within striking distance of City at the top of the table.
