The 22-year-old Spaniard, who moved to France 18 months ago, is believed to be on manager Andre Villas-Boas' shopping list alongside Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill
Chelsea intend to pursue £12 million-rated Marseille defender Cesar Azpilicueta with a deal for Bolton’s Gary Cahill set to be concluded in the coming days, according to The Daily Mirror.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas’ defence has often been criticised this season and, with the England centre-back in talks over an imminent £7m move from the Reebok Stadium, the Portuguese boss has apparently turned his attentions to the right-back position.
Azpilicueta, a Spain Under-21 international, joined the French side from Osasuna in 2010 for £8m.
Marseille are thought to be willing to sell for £12m despite not having prepared for a winter departure for the 22-year-old, though the Blues may be reluctant to meet their asking price, with potential concerns over his physical strength to be addressed.
Villas-Boas is believed to have turned to Azpilicueta as a result of Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel being widely expected to join Valencia.
The newspaper also reports that Chelsea continue to covet strikers Gonzalo Higuain, of Real Madrid, and Edinson Cavani, of Napoli.
