Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi claims was confident he knew where Liverpool’s Charlie Adam would put his spot-kick as the Latics stopper made a crucial stop in the 0-0 draw with the Reds.

The 29 year-old made the important save in the 50th minute to deny the Scottish international from giving Kenny Dalglish’s side the lead, therefore helping his team gain a valuable point in their fight against the drop.

Roberto Martinez's team are currently 18th in the Premier League with 14 points, one behind Wolves, but positive results against the top teams will undoubtedly help their cause.

Speaking to SkySports after the match, he said: “I think the players who take the ball especially when the game is hard like this, like to hit it at the same angle.

“Charlie Adam has a fantastic left foot and I was ready and happy not just for me but for all the lads in the team."

The former Bolton man was delighted with Wigan’s performance and thinks they have shown real spirit to get points from their games with the bigger teams in the Premier League.

Al-Habsi feels he and his teammates are determined to fight to retain their status in the top-flight, citing their attitude in games and training as factors helping them achieve their goal.

He added: "[It was a]Big big result for us tonight. The last three games I think we have been fantastic and the team spirit and everything.

"We have three points from West Brom and big two teams in Chelsea and Liverpool, and you know everyone thought that Wigan at this time would be struggling and everything, but the way the players show on the training ground and in the dressing room and the way they want to fight to stay in this league - fantastic.

“To play against Chelsea and then Liverpool and Monday against Man Utd, I don't think is that easy but we are improving game after game and then we are going up in the table.”
