The Belgian has been a long-term target of Arsenal and more recently Tottenham, and now the Magpies are apparently interested, but he is said to be reluctant to move to Tyneside
The 24-year-old has become a key feature of Ajax’s defence following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Arsenal in 2009, and is a regular starter for his country, either in defence of midfield.
Arsenal have been linked with Vertonghen on numerous occasions, as have their north London rivals Tottenham, yet Newcastle are now said to be interested in the defender.
De Telegraaf report that Newcastle have informed the defender's agent of their interest.
Sources suggest Vertonghen is unlikely to opt for a move to the North East but is willing to listen to any offer made.
Earlier this month, Goal.com broke the news of Tottenham’s interest in the Belgian, with a required fee reported to be around £10 million, as they look to cover for the expected January departure of Sebastien Bassong.
