Blackburn Rovers defender Michel Salgado says he has been left out of the squad that will face Bolton on Tuesday night as the club cannot afford to offer him a new contract.

A clause in the Spaniard’s current deal means that if the full-back plays nine more games for the Lancashire outfit this season then Rovers would have to hand the former Real Madrid man an extended stay at Ewood Park.

Salgado told Sky Sports News that he is “fit and available”, but will not feature in the crunch bottom of the table clash with the Trotters and instead has been given five days off.

"I want the fans to know all I want to do is help the team and help Blackburn survive in the Premier League, but the owners and manager aren't allowing me to do this," he said.

"I'm fit to play but I have been given five days off instead."

Manager Steve Kean has confirmed that the club would not be keeping the 36-year-old on at the end of the season and he could be moved on in January.
