'Win or lose against Bolton, Blackburn fans are just waiting for Venky's to pull the trigger on Steve Kean's ill-fated tenure'

Both sides are in need of a vital three points to ease their relegation fears although a Rovers supporter is adamant that victory would do little to quell the pressure on the Scot

There are more cliches available than points for Blackburn's next chance to turn around their season. However, the unusual support given to the Rovers boss by his employers makes for more interesting consideration.

Bolton are playing football with the lack of confidence and defensive rigour that Blackburn fans have become familiar with. I suspect that no Rovers fan will be surprised if they score three or four, lose heavily, or manage a draw that would help nobody. A clean sheet would certainly be a shock, though. However, for some Rovers fans it may no longer be a welcome one.

The vitriol poured upon Steve Kean has been well publicised and shows no signs of diminishing. The promise of a ceasing of protests in order to back the team - despite previous claims that protests couldn't affect the team anyway - has done nothing to lessen the clear desire of the fans to see Kean gone.

"Kean's relationship and reputation with Blackburn fans is shattered beyond any realistic hope of repair"
While some of the abuse has clearly gone too far (such as when Yakubu was abused for celebrating a goal with the manager), you can certainly sympathise with their desire for change. However, the expression in some quarters that losing this vital game would now be the best result in order to expedite his exit seems a strange one indeed. No matter the result, Kean's ill-fated tenure seems certain to end.

His relationship and reputation with Blackburn fans is shattered beyond any realistic hope of repair. Everyone is just waiting for Venky's to pull the trigger - yet they show no signs of doing so. If results on the pitch were their only yardstick in judging Kean he'd have long ago departed. If a loss makes no difference to the owners, why wish the worst on your club?

Nobody really knows what Venky's are considering and how far down the road to releasing Kean they are. It is this inability for fans and the media to understand their reasoning behind some of their decisions that has prompted the criticism about their lack of communication. Of course, if the team were winning on the pitch, nobody would care less about the reasoning behind the decisions or the perceived lack of communication. For fans and most owners other than Venky's, all that matters is the result on the pitch.

That brings us back to Tuesday's game. The Bolton fans want a win and many Blackburn supporters will be cheering them on. Venky's will be supporting their manager and may well continue to do so long after the team's fate has been decided this season, be that staying in the top league or going down.

A win for Rovers will help their fight to stay up, a goal they may well yet achieve, but it seems unlikely to change the opinion of many fans. Their desire to see Kean go has resulted in them no longer caring about Blackburn winning. They just want Kean out – apparently at all costs.
