Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel believes the team needs to learn from their mistakes after throwing away the lead to draw with Wigan on Saturday.

The Blues led the game after a goal from youngster Daniel Sturridge but a mistake by goalkeeper Petr Cech saw Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez slot the ball in to earn the Latics a point.

Chelsea now lie nine points behind league leaders Manchester City in fourth place in the Premier League and Obi Mikel told the club's official website that Andre Villas-Boas' side need to learn from their mistakes.

He said: "The goal was a lucky goal but it was a mistake from us, but this is what we need to learn from.

"We knew what we were coming into, it was going to be hard it was going to be difficult and they certainly made it difficult.

"We started the game well and then problems just kept on mounting, we found it hard to get hold and control the game.

"They played very smartly, pushing everyone forward and made it difficult.

"We just have to keep on going."
