Sunderland's Nicklas Bendtner has issued an apology in relation to his arrest last Thursday, insisting that he is fully focused on his football.

The 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, along with Black Cats team-mate Lee Cattermole, following an incident on December 10 when cars were found damaged in Newcastle city centre.

The pair were then held by Northumbria Police on Friday.

The Denmark forward, who is on loan at the Stadium of Light from Arsenal, said in a statement on Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, that he was incredibly sad at the events, which he has now put behind him to focus on playing for Sunderland.

In the statement, addressed to 'friends, fans, Sunderland and my family', he added: "My most important goal right now is getting rid of my injury and getting back in top form - for Sunderland and Denmark.

"I hope you will understand that I am therefore now intending to concentrate on football, and just about football - it is here and only here that my focus must lie."

Martin O'Neill's side are currently two points above the relegation zone, and face a tough trip to top four contenders Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
