Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga looks set to stay in France after seeing his proposed transfer to Newcastle United collapse due to a failed medical.
The 24-year-old flew into London on Wednesday to undergo the procedure, but despite the French club's medical specialist Professor Jaeger giving him the green light to complete his move to Tyneside, he did not pass a fitness test.
Maiga had recently sustained a knee injury, but his agent Karim Aklil expressed his dissatisfaction at seeing his client's dream move to the Premier League fall through at the last hurdle.
"I am disappointed at this turn of events," Aklil told L'Equipe. "Modibo is in perfect physical condition, which was confirmed by one of the leading experts in the field.
"I am convinced that the future will prove us right and that Modibo will prove his efficiency and remain as one of the best strikers in Ligue 1."
Maiga was on the verge of completing a £7 million move to the Sports Direct Arena, after five months of strenuous negotiations between the two parties.
A crisis meeting will be held in the coming days between the board members of Sochaux, as they prepare to make a decision about the future of their talisman.
