‘The result is a lesson for us’ – Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini following Chelsea defeat
The Italian tactician has backed his side to ‘become stronger’ after the Premier League leaders surrendered their unbeaten run against Andre Villas-Boas’ resurgent Blues
By Joe Wright
A Frank Lampard penalty ended City’s unbeaten domestic run and saw their lead at the summit of the Premier League reduced to two points, less than a week after their maiden Champions League campaign came to a premature end.
But the Italian is confident his side will learn from the events at Stamford Bridge, and has insisted that the team will become stronger as a result.
"At this moment, we should be very strong," he told reporters.
"It is at these moments that you become stronger, as players and a team. For this reason, the result is a lesson for us."
Mancini’s men were in front for much of the first half courtesy of Mario Balotelli’s early goal, and were unfortunate to be denied a penalty following Jose Bosingwa’s trip on David Silva.
The visitors also had Gael Clichy dismissed for two yellow cards, leaving the former Inter boss to rue the decisions which he felt cost his side the game.
"If the Silva penalty had been awarded, probably the game was finished," he added.
"After the sending off it was a different match."
Meanwhile, City midfielder James Milner has called on his team-mates to put the defeat behind them and bounce back at the weekend against an in-form Arsenal side.
"We are disappointed but now it is in the past," Milner told Sky Sports.
"The positive side is that we have another game coming up.
"We will be back in tomorrow, working as hard as we can. If it was possible to give even more then we would.
"The hunger is still there. If anything, there is even more incentive to bounce back with an even bigger performance at the weekend."
