thumbnail Hello,

After their disappointing defeat at the hands of the Gunners the Latics manager has rued missing early chances, stating they can’t play the way they did against top opponents

Roberto Martinez has claimed his Wigan side succumbed to a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of an efficient Arsenal side far too easily.

On the back of their 2-1 win over Sunderland, Martinez was hopeful of a good performance against the Gunners but his side failed to gain a foothold in the game and that was reflected in the scoreline.

Martinez said: “I thought we started really well in the first 15 minutes, we were creating problems and I thought we were going to grow really well into the game.

“We all know Arsenal have got a real quality squad and real experience but giving them that two-goal cushion helped them to use their experience and compose themselves and control the tempo of the game.

“In the second half we started brightly again but we weren’t ourselves at all, we couldn’t reach the level we reached in the last two games, unfortunately we cannot keep conceding goals like we did today.

“We conceded early goals against Sunderland and Blackburn and we got back into the games but when you’re playing against top-class opposition you need to be a little bit harder to beat in terms of conceding goals.

“I think the two goals are soft, one is a free shot from distance and it shouldn’t be that easy for Mikel Arteta to get a shot on target. Second one is a corner, which is a very straightforward situation but we’ve got higher standards than that.”

Martinez also conceded their approach to the game was all wrong, and explained that they need to change their tactics against the top teams in the league like Arsenal.

“To get a result against a good Arsenal side you need to put your noses in front and try to stop them playing, stop them enjoying their football and today unfortunately we couldn’t do that. With two early goals I think Arsenal found it easy,” he explained.

“We are disappointed because we were really excited coming into the game.

“We’ve got big games coming up in terms of the top teams in the competition, but that’s the league you want to be in and you're excited to play these glamorous sides but in a way we need to learn. We shouldn’t get affected by conceding goals.

“There’s a way to lose and today we lost too easy.”
