thumbnail Hello,

After making a surprise recovery from a back strain to face the league’s reigning champions, the Magpies boss has hailed the mentality of his Argentine defender

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has praised Fabricio Coloccini after the player made a remarkable recovery from a back strain to face Manchester United.

The injury, which Coloccini picked up in a training session, looked sure to rule him out of the Old Trafford clash, yet he managed to not only get on the pitch but also put in a performance which was central to the hard-earned point the Magpies picked up.

Pardew told The Chronicle: “It was Colo’s bravery that got him out there, and we wouldn’t have got the results without him – 100%.

“How he played at Man United I don’t know, he could hardly walk off the training field on Friday.

“His back seized up and the medical team did a fabulous job on him.”

Newcastle have managed to exceed early season expectations and now find themselves fourth in the league, largely thanks to the performances of central defensive duo Coloccini and Steven Taylor.

These showings have not gone unnoticed by the manager, who went on to speak of the ability Coloccini possesses as well as his mental strength: “To work with Colo each day is great for me.

"You can only learn from him and get better. He’s a great leader for us and the partnership is going really well.”

Newcastle will look to continue their impressive start to the league as they gear up to welcome a Chelsea side who have been struggling for form this season.
