Manchester United striker Michael Owen has been ruled out for six weeks with the injury he picked up in the 2-0 win against Otelul Galati in the Champions League.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United forward lasted just 10 minutes against the Romanian side, straining his left thigh in the build-up to United's opening goal.

A United spokesman told the club's official website: “Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so.”

The former England international is likely to miss the club's entire Christmas programme, and looks set to return against Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Eve or against former club Newcastle on January 4.
