Police are investigating abuse directed towards Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell after the former Manchester United player was sent a message via Twitter, from an account that no longer exists, containing racist content.

Campbell, 24, who has been battling serious injury problems and has not played for Sunderland since August 2010, was sent the tweet after he made a comment in support of Estonia ahead of their Euro 2012 play-off with the Republic of Ireland.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We are aware of the matter and inquiries are being made into it."

Campbell himself described the tweet as "disgraceful" upon retweeting the message to a wider audience, stating: "Wow just seen this tweet! Disgraceful."

Police recently arrested two teenagers as part of an investigation into a similar incident involving Newcastle United's Sammy Ameobi. The pair were later released on bail.
