The young forward came under attack on the social networking site, with the club releasing a statement to confirm they have reported the incident to authoritiesNewcastle United have confirmed police are currently investigating racist abuse directed towards the club’s forward Sammy Ameobi on Twitter.
A statement released on the club’s official website read: "Newcastle United are aware of a racist remark that was directed towards Sammy Ameobi via Twitter on Sunday evening.
"The club and Sammy have reported the matter to the police, who are now dealing with the incident.
"The racist comment is wholly unacceptable. Newcastle United will not tolerate racism of any kind and will take the strongest possible action against those responsible."
Promising youngster Ameobi is the younger brother of experienced striker Shola, and has made six appearances for the club since breaking into the fold last season.
The account where the abuse was posted has been deleted and local police have confirmed they are currently looking into the incident.
A spokeswoman from Northumbria Police said: "The matter was reported to police on Sunday. Police are investigating."
