Vermaelen made his first start in two months for the side but had to leave the field of play at the end with his manager saying afterwards that he did not feel able to go back on to the pitch.
Whilst there were fears the Belgian had aggravated his calf during the match, he insisted afterwards that his pain was nothing more than cramping up and that another long lay-off was not on the cards.
"I had a small cramp at the end,” he told reporters.
“Nothing serious. Just went out as a precaution."
