Wigan Athletic midfielder Ben Watson has described this weekend’s meeting with local rivals Bolton Wanderers as ‘massive’.

After a poor run of form, the Latics currently sit just two points above bottom club Bolton, who themselves are in desperate need of a change in fortunes after six defeats in their opening seven matches.

Even with the season still largely in its infancy, this particular Lancashire derby could be one of the most important in the clubs’ recent history. And Watson, who has not missed a game for Wigan this season, seems well aware of the importance of picking up a good result at the DW Stadium.

"It's a massive, massive game and we need to get a win under our belts,” the midfielder told Wigan Today.

"That's five defeats on the spin now and we need to try to sort that out."

Having survived the drop in to the Championship after a thrilling relegation battle last season, early form seems to indicate that this will be another tough campaign for Roberto Martinez’s men. But Watson appears hopeful for Wigan’s chances, believing there are positives to be gleaned from the way they have played thus far this season.

He continued: "I thought we controlled the Aston Villa game at times, but they scored more goals than we did at the end of the day.

"But we've got to move on now and try to take the positives into the Bolton game this weekend.

"Maybe the international break gives us a bit of time to reflect on the last few weeks, and recharge our batteries for the next block of fixtures."
