The 31-year-old has been in rehabilitation for over seven months after suffering an injury in last season’s fixture against the champions at Anfield back in March.
The injury led to an operation at the end of the campaign, with infection setting in after the surgery forcing a further setback in the skipper’s recovery.
Liverpool have eased Gerrard back into action and he has made just the three substitute appearances this season, with the last coming in the Merseyside derby win at Everton.
Manager Kenny Dalglish knows only too well the difference the dynamic midfielder can make for the Reds against such an opponents as United.
He told reporters: “A fit Steven Gerrard strengthens this football club, no question. If you have Steven in your squad, it’s going to raise the profile and standard.
“We want to have a really strong squad – and him being in it makes it that much stronger."
