Official: Arsenal complete signing of Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker

German international joins Arsene Wenger's side in £7.9million switch from the Bundesliga, signing a four-year deal at the Emirates

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of centre-back Per Mertesacker from Werder Bremen in a deal worth £7.9million (€9m).

The Gunner’s have moved to bolster their squad before the close of the transfer window following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, with the need for reinforcements at the Emirates emphasised following Sunday’s 8-2 defeat away to Manchester United.

Mertesacker was given permission on Tuesday to leave the German national squad, for whom he has featured 75 times, and fly to London to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

Now the 26-year-old’s switch to the Premier League has been confirmed, with the towering defender signing a four-year deal with Arsene Wenger’s side.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mertesacker said: “I had a great time at SV Werder Bremen and I’m grateful to the club. Moving to London enables me to fulfil a dream and a further step in my career. The Premier League has always represented a great challenge for me.”

Wenger also added: “We are delighted to welcome Per Mertesacker to the Club. He is a German international with vast experience and strength and is good on the floor and in the air. I believe he will be well-suited to the Premier League and a tremendous asset to the team.”
