Newcastle United will announce the completion of a £5 million move for Inter defender Davide Santon today, Goal.com can reveal.
Officials at the Premier League club are in the process of putting the finishing touches to the deal for the Italian full-back who is poised to sign a five-year contract at St James’ Park.
Santon has been undergoing a medical on Tyneside ahead of the move to Newcastle and with personal terms already agreed the club are certain that he will finalise the transfer on Tuesday.
The move will give Santon the chance to invigorate a career that has failed to flourish since he burst into the Inter side as a teenager when he was likened to Italian legend Paolo Maldini.
The 20-year-old has been brought to Tyneside to fill the void at left-back created by Jose Enrique’s move to Liverpool after Magpies manager Alan Pardew failed in an attempt to sign Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven.
Santon can also play on either and his arrival will strengthen Newcastle's position when it comes to re-opening talks with current right-back Danny Simpson after negotiations over a new deal broke down over the summer.
Newcastle are also on the look-out for a new striker and Sochaux forward Modibo Maiga remains on their radar as the club seek to build on their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.
Sochaux chairman Alexander Lacombe has revealed that Newcastle have bid for their £7m-rated player and disclosed that his club are aiming to sign Leeds striker Max Gradel.
“There has been an offer from them [Newcastle] but my goal is to maintain a competitive team,” Lacombe said. “I won’t sell Modibo without having found a replacement.”
As for Gradel, he added: “We hope to finalise the deal. It’s a deal which is at an advanced stage."
